Recognizable to all because of their distinctive shells, pond snails are slow-moving ambassadors to the world of wetlands.

Habitat

Look for pond snails in still and slow-moving waters, like wetlands and small lakes.

Food

Pond snails are herbivories, eating aquatic plants and algae.

Behaviour

Pond snails start as tiny eggs, hatch into juveniles, and gradually grow into adults. They have shells that stay and grow with them. These shells are spiral-shaped and can be coiled or pointy, with different shell sizes and shapes for different species. Shells provide protection from predators and help with buoyancy control. Snails eat as they glide by scrapping, as their mouths are on their “foot”.

Conservation

Pond snails are of overall low conservation concern.
